In the tannery, Gerhard Olsacher checks the leather before it goes to Gabor. Only recipients of high-quality leather use special tools to punch holes in the leather. “If a hole is drilled, it can be sent to Gabor,” he explains. Leather is a valuable commodity on the world market. Orsacher’s decisions affect goods worth millions of dollars. Did he do the right thing? An experienced leather inspector knows whether to forward a complaint from the receiving department or production. Only the highest quality products are received and processed there. Do you place the highest demands on the visual, technical and mechanical properties of the leather? After all, Gabor’s customers expect high-quality footwear. Gabor currently buys 65 different types of leather, and because the leather they want comes in different colors, Gabor lists around 300 “leather products.” Gerhard Olsacher knew them all.

Fashion sense

To fight or not to fight? Gabor’s strict checklist helps decide who to accept the leather for. Among other things, there are criteria such as strength, skin size, color, appearance, softness and grip, as well as various technical properties. Gabor requires a high degree of consistency between all leathers. Currently, at most 70% of all processed leather is stylized leather, such as used styles or for short. The skin is quite personalized and not uniform. Olsacher had to determine whether the designed leather met Gabor's strict standards and was suitable for the breed. That also requires a sense of fashion. He had to see the shoes behind the leather. Materials that don't fit one shoe may fit another. In the tannery, Gerhard Olsacher is a person who makes decisions on the spot. This requires great sensitivity in his mind and fingers. "The leather had to have a typical leather touch. I needed to touch it and fall in love with it," explains Orsach.
